Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy FAQs

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, relaxing session that, through light touch, can facilitate the body’s natural powers of self-healing. It is a non-manipulative session that developed from the work of American Osteopath Dr. William Garner Sutherland in the early 1900s. It has continued to evolve and is now practised separately from Osteopathy as Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy. All the systems of the body can benefit from Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy. These include the Cardiovascular System, Endocrine, Digestive, Respiratory, Excretory, Lymphatic, Reproductive, Muscular, Skeletal and Central Nervous System.

The therapist’s hands are used to listen not only to the intrinsic movements of the bones of the head and spinal column, the membranes and the cerebrospinal fluid (which surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord) but also the movements of the other systems and organs. Palpation of these subtle internal rhythms can facilitate access to health already in existence in the body and result in release in areas of restriction, effecting structural change, increased physical energy and sense of wellbeing; and have much wider implications, both emotionally and spiritually.

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy can improve quality of life in general, as well as help with specific issues. It is so gentle that it is suitable for all, from babies suffering from colic or birth trauma to the elderly and those who are fragile or suffering from acute pain. It can also assist with recovery from accidents, falls and strains and help with emotional and traumatic conditions and states.

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy can help you address a wide range of physical and emotional concerns, including ante and postnatal issues, back and neck pain, birth trauma, colic and crying in babies, digestive problems, immune system disorders, insomnia, menstrual pain and PMS, migraines, re-integration after accidents, respiratory issues, sciatica, sinusitis, sports injuries, stress-related illnesses, tinnitus and middle ear problems, TMJ (jaw) disorders and whiplash injuries.

Sessions take place online via Zoom. You can also come to The Studio at Reepham House in Lyndhurst, Hampshire, for an in-person appointment.

Initially, a full case history is taken, noting any specific ailments or concerns which may be bothering you. During the session, you can expect to feel deep relaxation and sometimes sensations such as heat, pulsations and tingling during the session. Many people experience reduced stress levels and improvement in the functioning of the immune system as a result of Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy.

Generally, a session will last about fifty-five minutes.

Loose, comfortable clothing.

Clients respond in different ways, depending on their bodies. Some will feel deeply relaxed whilst others may feel refreshed and energised. Occasionally, it can take a few days for the session to integrate into the body.

This is very individual and will depend on the particular issue and how you respond to the session. Some clients come for a few sessions to address a particular issue. Others come regularly, on an ongoing basis, as part of maintaining their overall health and wellbeing.
