How Releasing Somatic Memories From The Womb Can Rebalance The Whole Body

Over many years, my work has shown me that our bodies can maintain and hold on to an energetic imprint or tissue memory of things that happened in the past. This felt-sense tissue memory can stay with us over long periods of time, sometimes even decades. It can make us feel as if we are living through those same experiences even in the present moment.

One of the places in the body where women have a tendency to store these memories is in the womb space.

This can begin in early childhood when we start to hold in, push down and suppress feelings and emotions. When we are very young, our brains are not yet fully developed. Memories can become stored somatically in the tissue and organs of the body, along with any physical injuries and accidents.

Over time, tension and constriction build through the soft tissue. The fascia can tighten around the bundles of muscle fibres. The motility of the pelvic floor and respiratory diaphragm, as well as the psoas muscles (hip flexors), become compromised. To compound this, the adrenals can release cortisol and adrenaline in response to trauma, ongoing stress or anxiety, contributing to further dysfunction. This is because cortisol and adrenaline can tighten the tissue further.

Eventually, all of the above can lead to back and joint pain, muscle tension, various digestive problems and constricted blood and lymphatic flow, amongst many other issues.

Maintaining balance throughout the pelvic structures and organs cannot be underestimated.

If accidents, surgeries, womb pathologies and traumatic pregnancy or birth experiences are added into the mix, it can result in further complications. Difficult emotions can become trapped in compromised or damaged body tissue.

The body can always remember the energetic imprint of the whole before the surgery. It can bring that memory forward into the present. If a client has had surgeries to remove part or all of their womb structures or their appendix or other organs removed, it does not prevent their womb and pelvis from finding a new state of balance.

Our bodies will always look for comfort over discomfort. Tissue will respond with relief, exhibiting renewed quality of function, flow and motility.

If a client has adhesions from surgeries or complications from womb pathologies such as endometriosis or fibroids, their body will still hold the original matrix. This is the memory of the energetic imprint from when health was present in the tissue. We can work with this to bring the health memory into the here and now.

When I began working in depth with the womb, ovaries and pelvis combined, it was as if I had discovered a new limb which had been hidden from view.

As the internal womb structures slowly and gently rebalance, I have seen a knock-on effect occur. All other parts and systems of the body begin to feel more spacious. The Endocrine System, for example, which includes the adrenals and ovaries, finds more balance. Clients notice less ‘reaction’ and more ‘response’ when working under pressure, enabling them to move more easily through the day. Thought processes become clearer, lymphatic flow improves, pain and discomfort reduce and general wellbeing increases.

Another noticeable impact of improved pelvic and womb balance can be a greater sense of connection to the earth and nature.

This may be because we come deeper into relationship with our bodies. You might feel a sense of grounding and stability through the legs. You may be able to find calm when those around you are unsettled and discover a new sense of purpose despite previously lacking motivation or creativity.

Using skills from Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy and Somatic Experiencing® amongst other modalities, I work with clients to help facilitate the resolution of early physical and emotional trauma memories that have become trapped in the pelvic region. This can help clients find greater balance and equilibrium as their womb space connects back to their original power and they find their sense of ease.

Both Somatic Experiencing® and Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy are, by definition, trauma-attuned modalities. Used together, either online or in person, they can facilitate the resolution of embodied trauma in a very profound but gentle way, honouring the unique wishes and needs of each client.
